Today ended up being one of the hardest
days on the bike for us and the Giro peleton. The plan was to ride from
Canazei to the Folgaria climb. We would ride most of the stage
except for the Santa Barbara climb. We started out with a leisurely
downhill ride of about 45 miles from Canazei to Trento stopping once for
coffee on the way. Once in Trento our tour group split up and the
four of us hung out in Trento to watch the Intergiro and have
lunch. We rode the short 12 miles to Calliano which is
at the base of the Folgaria climb. The weather was extremely warm
in the 80's. The Folgaria climb proved to be very difficult with
many 10% sections. We stopped in Folgaria to get something to eat,
then found a spot to watch the race pass. You could see the
difficulty of this climb in the faces of the racers. Cadel
Evans lost 17 minutes and the Maglia Rosa. Paolo Savoldelli became
the new race leader.
